Almost a new library...

Just before Fall Break and with the help of Ms. Clarke, Mrs. Gordon and Mrs. Christensen I took all of the fiction books off of the shelves and re-organized them into genres.  This was a huge job... way bigger than I anticipated.  We are done and we now have several section in our fiction...

Plus the series section with books like Bone, Babymouse, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid


With this new system I will quickly be able to help students find books when their teachers send them in with a specific genre in mind.

Glorious Fall!

Halloween was such fun this year and now it's November 1st. Of all the glorious things... it rained. I love the rain and I love looking out of the 2nd story window of the library at the huge Sugar Maple tree across the street. This year I've been asked to help with "pick - up" which means every afternoon I go out and help the students at the crosswalk. Today I will go out with an umbrella. Not only do I get to look at the view from the library window now I get to be part of it.

A Whale Shark

GULP!

This whale shark almost swallowed a man who was filming underwarter pictures in Mexico. The shark feeds with its mouth open, catching fish and planktin.  With a 5 foot wide mouth and 350 rows of teeth, he might seem dangerous but he is actually docile.

As the largest fish in the sea, reaching lengths of 40 feet or more, whale sharks have an enormous menu from which to choose. Fortunately for most sea-dwellers—and us!—their favorite meal is plankton. (National Georgraphic)

PALISADES RESERVOIR

Idaho

I spent the better part of a week at Palisade Reservoir in Idaho and Jackson Hole in Wyoming.  The view of the lake from our cabin was spectacular; I could have stayed forever.  We did have a little surprise.  One morning we noticed that a very large section of the meadow grass, just to the side of our cabin, was matted down.  We were pretty sure some kind of animal had spent the night.  The following night my son used the night lens on his video camera and filmed whatever was out there...

It was a

"GYNORMOUS" BULL MOOSE

 ten feet from the back door.

It made me want to re-read HATCHET by Gary Paulsen

JACKSON HOLE

This is the park in down town Jackson Hole.  There are four arches made of elk antlers at each corner of the park. I sat and watched the pocket gophers play and then got caught in a wonderful summer rainstorm. It's my favorite weather.

If you are ever up that way be sure to stop by THE RAINEY CREEK COUNTRY STORE and get a "square ice cream cone."

Today I found a bird's nest nestled deep inside one of the hanging baskets on my porch. I can't imagine what the mother bird was thinking when she built the nest. Look closely at the eggs, one of them is speckled and two are light blue.... interesting.

HELP... I'm being eaten by an alligator!

Meet Gus

Remember the alligator head I brought back from Florida... well this is the one I wanted to bring.  His name is Gus and he is 13 feet long. He lives in the parlor of the LDS Deseret Ranch just outside of Orlando. For years he lived in the orange groves and was kind of a "pet."  He got old and grumpy and way too aggressive so he ended up here. I could just imagine him at storytime.

Maria Gomes Valentim

About to turn 115

Guinness World Records confirms that Brazilian Maria Gomes Valentim has taken the title of 'Oldest Living Person' aged 114 years and 313 days. Maria was born on July 9, 1896, in Carangola, Brazil, where she has resided all her life. She attributes her longevity to a healthy diet.

How did the Guiness Book of World Records get started?

On May 4, 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then the managing director of the Guinness Brewery, went on a shooting party in North Slob in County Wexford, Ireland. He became involved in an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, then later realized it was impossible to confirm in reference books. He then thought that a book supplying answers to such questions could be popular.

The first 197-page edition of the "Guinness Book of Records" was bound on Aug. 27, 1955, and went on to the top of the British best-seller list by Christmas. Over 400 million copies have sold since. The most recent one to hit the shelves is the "Guinness World Records 2011."
